About the show

When Dorothy famously triumphed over the Wicked Witch, we only ever heard one side of the story. Gregory Maguire's acclaimed 1995 novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, re-imagined the land of Oz, creating a parallel universe to the familiar story written by L. Frank Baum and first published as The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in 1900.

Wicked tells the incredible untold story of an unlikely but profound friendship between two girls who first meet as sorcery students at Shiz University: the blonde and very popular Glinda and a misunderstood green girl, Elphaba.

Following an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their friendship reaches a crossroads and their lives take very different paths. Glinda's unflinching desire for popularity sees her seduced by power while Elphaba's determination to remain true to herself, and to those around her, will have unexpected and shocking consequences for her future. Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfil their destinies as Glinda The Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.

Chinese New Year 2012

Sunday 29 January 2012 will see the arrival of the Chinese New Year of the Dragon, a creature renowned in Chinese legend, to the heart of London’s West End to celebrate the arrival of the New Year. This year’s celebrations will run from 10am until 6pm at locations across London:

Festivities will begin at 10am with the return of the fantastic New Year’s parade around the West-end. Passing through Chinatown, Shaftsbury Avenue, Charing Cross Road and Rupert Street the parade will reach its final destination of Trafalgar Square at 12pm.

An official opening ceremony will then take place in Trafalgar Square from 12pm with speeches from special guests including Mayor of London Boris Johnson, Lord Mayor of Westminster Councillor Susie Burbridge and the Chinese Ambassador to London, Mr. Liu Xiaoming

Once officially opened, the real celebrations will kick off with Dragon dancing, music and performances on the Trafalgar Square stage from 12pm-6pm

Alongside Trafalgar Square, a second stage on Shaftesbury Avenue will host performances from a range of local community groups and schools, also from 12pm – 6pm

Meanwhile Chinatown will play host to a parade by Lion dancers as well as a range of stalls selling traditional produce throughout the day

A Brazilian martial art? A cultural art form? A dance-fight game?

Capoeira is an art form which can be described in many ways. It encompasses Afro-Brazilian culture, art, music, language, self defense and acrobatic movements into one cohesive whole. The result is beautiful yet dangerous, smooth yet powerful. It was created in Brazil by slaves brought from Africa, especially from Angola some time after the 16th century. Most people believe it began as a way for the slaves to fight back against their owners, disguising a deadly fighting style as something that looked like a dance. In order to keep its roots, we still play instruments, sing, clap meanwhile two “players” are inside of a roda (circle) developing their movements in the form of the game (Jogo), that is what we call it , not a fight, a game. Through Capoeira people develop a great sense of coordination, self-esteem, flexibility, balance, discipline and respect for themselves and others.

Traditional English Afternoon Tea

Afternoon tea was introduced in England by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, in the year 1840. The Duchess would become hungry around four o'clock in the afternoon. The evening meal in her household was served fashionably late at eight o'clock, thus leaving a long period of time between lunch and dinner. The Duchess asked that a tray of tea, bread and butter (some time earlier, the Earl of Sandwich had had the idea of putting a filling between two slices of bread) and cake be brought to her room during the late afternoon. This became a habit of hers and she began inviting friends to join her.

This pause for tea became a fashionable social event. During the 1880's upper-class and society women would change into long gowns, gloves and hats for their afternoon tea which was usually served in the drawing room between four and five o'clock.

Traditional afternoon tea consists of a selection of dainty sandwiches (including of course thinly sliced cucumber sandwiches), scones served with clotted cream and preserves. Cakes and pastries are also served. Tea grown in India or Ceylon is poured from silver tea pots into delicate bone china cups.

There are a wide selection of hotels in London offering the quintessential afternoon tea experience . Hotels offering traditional afternoon tea include Claridges, the Dorchester, the Ritz and the Savoy, as well as Harrods and Fortnum and Mason.

Brighton is one of the most vibrant and fun cities in UK. It is only one hour and half travel by coach. If you take a train from London Bridge, it is only 55 minutes! It is not a big city like London, so you can walk around and will come across unique beaches and eccentric looking people. On the other hand you will find historical buildings and narrow lanes that take you to small antique jewellery shops.

Exibition: Archile Gorky
At Tate Modern

Archile Gorky is an Armenian-born artist who shaped Abstract Expressionism, America's most explosive painterly movement. He left Armenia in 1920 after having witnessed Ottoman Turks destroyed a whole generation of Armenians and country.

Arriving in United States, he changed his name to Archile Gorky and invented a new life for himself.

Despite having some formal art training at Art School, Gorky was essentially self-taught, and obtained most of his education through visits to museums and galleries and reading art books and magazines.

By doing so, Gorky became familiar with avant-garde European art and embarked on a systematic study of its masters, most notably Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso, and Joan Miró.

To friends and colleagues who criticized his borrowings as having a lack of originality, Gorky stressed the importance of tradition and continuity, maintaining that an artist can mature only after having experienced a period of apprenticeship.

In the late 1930s and early 1940s, Gorky’s prominent position in the New York art scene brought him into contact with several members of the Surrealist group, who had been forced to flee Europe during the Second World War.

His close friendship with the poet and leader of the group, André Breton, made a deep and lasting impression on the artist.

The Chilean-born painter Roberto Matta also contributed to the development of his mature style, encouraging Gorky to improvise and experiment with biomorphic forms, and introducing the artist to the Surrealist technique of automatic drawing, which he deftly mastered. In the numerous innovative landscapes that Gorky produced in the early 1940s, his abstract vocabulary embraced natural and organic forms, which he conveyed with an explosive, erotic energy.

Until his death in 1948, Gorky painted highly original abstractions that combined memories of his Armenian childhood, especially the gardens, orchards and wheat fields of his rural homeland, with direct observations from nature.

A string of tragic events beginning in the mid 1940s, however, would leave the artist in both physical and emotional agony. A fire in his studio, a painful operation for rectal cancer, a debilitating automobile accident, and marital troubles led the depressed Gorky to commit suicide on July 21, 1948.

Although his life was tragically cut short, the unique and impressive body of work that Gorky left behind made a profound impact on American Art, securing his reputation as the last of the great Surrealist painters and one of the first Abstract Expressionists.

We all know Afternoon Tea is one of British traditions. But what is Afternoon Tea..?

Here is a very brief history of Afternoon Tea:

In the 1840s, the British habitually ate just twice a day: breakfast and dinner in the evening. Anna Russell, the 7th Duchess of Bedford, complained of 'having that sinking feeling' as the afternoon wore on, and had the bright idea of enjoying a pot of tea, becoming a popular beverage at that time, in the afternoon, accompanied by a light snack.
Tiring of taking tea alone, she began to invite friends to join her for a cup of tea and afternoon snack at her country home, Woburn Abbey. Once the summer season was over and she returned to London, she'd grown so fond of her teatime ritual that she saw no reason to stop. The idea caught on with other society hostesses and before you could say 'Polly put the kettle on', she'd started a trend.

Afternoon tea traditionally consists of dainty sandwiches (crusts on or off) with fillings such as salmon, watercress, egg and cress, cucumber, a selection of cake and, of course, tea with milk.
For a cream tea - whether invented in Devon or Cornwall - split freshly baked scones in two, cover each half with clotted cream and then add raspberry or strawberry jam. Or if you prefer, start with the jam, then add the cream.
